fall/winter 2012 jewelry trends

The coming season is not for the fainthearted. No snugly  autumn leaves, warm pumpkin orange shades and grounding browns. The underworld is rising in force, snakes make a move to slither into gold glimmering necklaces and brackets,  while Mexican style sculls are grinning everywhere from Alexander McQueen to popular outlets. We are bracing ourselves. Never before fashion jewelry came so close to hardware store supplies - nails, rivets and spikes, layered twisted chains, burnished metal sheet pieces come together with chunks of uncut rough stone, shards, snake skin, animal teeth and bones. We may not be heading for the end of the world, but jewelry wise, we will be armed and gold dripping with the Byzantine decadence of the last emperors or tribal queens of a faraway kingdom.

This prickly, un-cuddlyness full of pointy edges, triangles, blades and stakes plays out with softer vintage opulence of mixed chains, pearls, tasseled earrings, semiprecious stones, rose gold and bow motifs.

The retro stalwart brooch is back, fancy, grandiose or whimsical, but never boring. Large jewelled cuffs, stacked bangles and bracelets, big Tuareg style pendants and large metal pieces speak to our tribal heart.

So let's play the gilded fall and winter armory wars, whether just for fun, or because we are genuinely scared.
